India’s Renewable Energy Capacity Soars: Major Growth in Solar, Wind, Hydro, and Nuclear Sectors

India’s Renewable Energy Surge: October 2023 to October 2024

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) shares data on renewable growth. India’s renewable energy sector grew significantly over the past year. This growth reflects the nation’s dedication to clean energy targets.

Total RE Capacity Reaches New High

India added 24.2 GW of renewable energy capacity this year. Renewable capacity increased from 178.98 GW in October 2023 to 203.18 GW in October 2024. The country’s total non-fossil fuel capacity reached 211.36 GW, up from 186.46 GW.

Solar and Wind Power Surge Across India

Solar Power Growth:
India’s solar sector added 20.1 GW this year, a 27.9% increase. Solar capacity rose from 72.02 GW to 92.12 GW. Total solar projects, including under implementation, now stand at 250.57 GW.

Wind Power Growth:
Wind power grew steadily by 7.8%, reaching 47.72 GW from 44.29 GW. India’s wind project pipeline totals 72.35 GW.

Significant Capacity Additions and Project Expansions

Between April and October 2024, India installed 12.6 GW of renewable energy. In October alone, India added 1.72 GW, marking rapid growth. Renewable projects under implementation rose to 143.94 GW, up from 99.08 GW. Tendered projects increased to 89.69 GW, up from 55.13 GW.

Hydro and Nuclear: Strengthening India’s Energy Mix

Hydropower projects added 46.93 GW to the renewable mix. Nuclear power reached 8.18 GW, boosting energy diversity. These contributions strengthen India’s green energy transition.
